# Archiving a bot

> Archive a bot you don't need right now. It keeps its chat, files, settings and tasks, and takes no new work until you unarchive it.

**Archiving a bot turns it off without losing anything.** An archived bot keeps its chat, its files, its settings and its scheduled tasks. It stops taking new messages and its tasks stop running until you unarchive it. Nothing brings it back by itself: only an owner or admin can unarchive it.

Only owners and admins can archive or unarchive a bot.

## Archive a bot

**1. Open Bots**

Go to **Bots** in the sidebar.

**2. Open the bot's menu**

Click the **⋮** button on the bot's row and choose **Archive**.

**3. Undo if you need to**

A message confirms the bot is archived. Click **Undo** in it to bring the bot straight back.

The bot moves to the **Archived** list at the bottom of the Bots page, with the date you archived it.

## What changes while a bot is archived

| | While archived |
| - | - |
| Its chat | Stays. You can open and read it, but the message box is replaced by a note that the bot is archived. |
| A reply it is writing when you archive it | Finishes. |
| New messages to it | Refused, and the sender is told. In Slack, Discord or Telegram threads it started, people get a reply that the bot is archived. People who email it get an email saying so, at most once a day. Other bots are told it is archived. |
| Its scheduled tasks | Do not run. **Run now** and test runs are refused too. |
| New tasks | Can't be given to it. |
| The sidebar, @mentions and the list of bots other bots can message | It no longer appears. |
| Its settings, files and saved logins | Kept as they are. You can still edit its settings. |

## Unarchive a bot

Go to **Bots**, find the bot under **Archived**, open its **⋮** menu and choose **Unarchive**. You can also click **Unarchive** in the note at the bottom of the bot's chat.

The bot takes messages again right away and shows up in the sidebar and in @mentions.

Nothing that came in while the bot was archived is waiting for it. Tasks that came due do not all run at once when you unarchive it: each one is marked as skipped in its run history, with the reason "its bot was archived when it was due", and runs again at its next scheduled time. A one-time task whose time passed while the bot was archived does not run.

## Archiving or deleting

| | Archive | Delete |
| - | - | - |
| Chat and past runs | Kept | Kept |
| Can be undone | Yes, with **Unarchive** | No |
| Its @name | Stays reserved | Free for a new bot |
| Its scheduled tasks | Kept, paused | Kept, and run without the bot's persona and settings |
| Counts toward your bot limit | Yes | No |

## Limits

* **Unarchive is on the web only.** The mobile app does not list archived bots and cannot unarchive them. Use the Bots page on the web.
* **Follow-ups the bot planned for itself are dropped.** If the bot had set itself a reminder, or was waiting for a long job to finish, and that comes due while it is archived, it does not pick it up after you unarchive it. Ask the bot to pick the work up again.
* **An archived bot still counts toward your bot limit**, because it keeps everything it had.
